Mawhēriki's Anatomy is a body of work built from seven paintings. Each one pulls apart a different system of the self. Support. Risk. Guardianship. Learning. Operation. Standing. Becoming.
The works draw from tiki and wheku-inspired forms, whānau memory, humour, trauma, home, faith, lyrics, carving, and the marks left behind by growing up between systems.
This is not anatomy in the medical sense. It is anatomy as self-dissection. The paintings cut open the artist's inner world and ask what it takes to rebuild yourself without losing where you come from.
The works are funny at first, but heavy underneath. Each painting is one organ of a single body — together they make a self that can stand whole.
